img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 12\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>From\u2029a\u2029well-informed\u2029survey\u2029Nigeria\u2029is\u2029said\u2029to\u2029have\u2029continued\u2029to\u2029spend\u2029over\u2029400\u2029billion\u2029 naira\u2029annually\u2029on\u2029the\u2029importation\u2029of\u2029vehicles.\u2029With\u2029 \u2029this\u2029massive\u2029 \u2029dependence\u2029 \u2029on\u2029the\u2029\u2029 importation\u2029of\u2029vehicles,\u2029Nigeria\u2029\u2029no\u2029doubt\u2029\u2029has\u2029become\u2029a\u2029one\u2029stop\u2029\u2029dumping\u2029\u2029ground\u2029\u2029for\u2029\u2029 virtually\u2029\u2029all\u2029kinds\u2029\u2029of\u2029vehicles,\u2029especially\u2029fairly\u2029used\u2029cars,\u2029bus\u2029trucks\u2029,\u2029\u2029which\u2029sometimes\u2029\u2029do\u2029\u2029cost\u2029 fortune\u2029to\u2029repair\u2029after\u2029they\u2029are\u2029\u2029purchased.<\/p>\n<p>While\u2029 \u2029the\u2029 \u2029forgoing\u2029 \u2029obtains\u2029today\u2029,records\u2029 \u2029have\u2029it\u2029 \u2029that\u2029before\u2029 \u2029the\u2029late\u202980&#8217;s\u2029 \u2029Nigeria\u2029 \u2029did\u2029not\u2029 have\u2029 \u2029to\u2029spend\u2029 \u2029hundreds\u2029 \u2029of\u2029billions\u2029 \u2029to\u2029import\u2029 \u2029vehicles\u2029 \u2029from\u2029developed\u2029 \u2029and\u2029developing\u2029 countries\u2029since\u2029car\u2029manufacturing\u2029 \u2029and\u2029assembly\u2029 \u2029plants\u2029 \u2029were\u2029fully\u2029 \u2029operational.\u2029The\u2029likes\u2029of\u2029 Volkswagen\u2029of\u2029Nigeria\u2029and\u2029Peugeot\u2029automobile\u2029of\u2029Nigeria\u2029produced\u2029hundreds\u2029of\u2029affordable\u2029 cars\u2029daily.<\/p>\n<p>At\u2029\u2029the\u2029time\u2029,\u2029people\u2029\u2029did\u2029not\u2029\u2029have\u2029\u2029to\u2029save\u2029for\u2029\u2029years\u2029\u2029to\u2029buy\u2029a\u2029car,\u2029they\u2029could\u2029barely\u2029afford\u2029neither\u2029 did\u2029they\u2029\u2029have\u2029to\u2029\u2029replace\u2029\u2029their\u2029\u2029car\u2029\u2029engines\u2029shortly\u2029after\u2029\u2029purchase\u2029because\u2029\u2029most\u2029\u2029of\u2029the\u2029cars\u2029\u2029 were\u2029 \u2029what\u2029is\u2029 \u2029colloquially\u2029 \u2029referred\u2029 \u2029to\u2029 \u2029as\u2029&#8217;\u2029tear\u2029rubber&#8221;\u2029(\u2029straight\u2029from\u2029factories)\u2029some\u2029of\u2029 \u2029the\u2029\u2029 popular\u2029 \u2029brands\u2029then,\u2029like\u2029 \u2029Peugeot\u2029504\u2029and\u2029505\u2029could\u2029be\u2029seen\u2029everywhere,\u2029Volkswagen\u2029 \u2029was\u2029 also\u2029another\u2029small\u2029 \u2029and\u2029affordable\u2029 \u2029delight\u2029 \u2029in\u2029Nigerian\u2029roads.\u2029Mercedes\u2029Benz\u2029trucks\u2029were\u2029also\u2029 assembled\u2029by\u2029Anambra\u2029Motor\u2029Manufacturing\u2029Company\u2029(ANAMCO)<\/p>\n<p>With\u2029 \u2029the\u2029recession\u2029that\u2029embraced\u2029 \u2029the\u2029Nigerian\u2029 \u2029economy,\u2029 \u2029massive\u2029 \u2029importation\u2029of\u2029cars\u2029which\u2029 came\u2029\u2029in\u2029with\u2029\u2029the\u2029recession\u2029\u2029began\u2029\u2029when\u2029local\u2029manufacturing\u2029\u2029plants\u2029could\u2029no\u2029longer\u2029\u2029bear\u2029\u2029the\u2029 high\u2029cost\u2029\u2029of\u2029production\u2029in\u2029Nigeria,\u2029production\u2029\u2029capacity\u2029reduced\u2029\u2029and\u2029manufacturers\u2029could\u2029\u2029not\u2029\u2029 meet\u2029up\u2029with\u2029local\u2029demand,\u2029production\u2029 \u2029capacity\u2029 \u2029did\u2029not\u2029 \u2029just\u2029reduce,\u2029tens\u2029 \u2029of\u2029thousands\u2029jobs\u2029 were\u2029lost.<\/p>\n<p>Figures\u2029from\u2029\u2029the\u2029bureau\u2029of\u2029\u2029statistics\u2029\u2029show\u2029\u2029that\u202920\u2029percent\u2029\u2029of\u2029Nigerians\u2029\u2029are\u2029\u2029unemployed,\u2029\u2029the\u2029 number\u2029\u2029of\u2029Jobs\u2029\u2029that\u2029automotive\u2029industry\u2029\u2029would\u2029have\u2029\u2029created\u2029if\u2029fully\u2029\u2029active\u2029\u2029is\u2029enormous,\u2029thus\u2029\u2029 speculatively\u2029\u2029situated\u2029\u2029\u2029if\u2029the\u2029\u2029automotive\u2029\u2029industry\u2029\u2029is\u2029functioning\u2029at\u2029full\u2029capacity\u2029\u2029about\u2029\u202970,000\u2029 skilled\u2029\u2029and\u2029semi-skilled\u2029jobs\u2029\u2029and\u2029about\u2029\u2029210,000\u2029indirect\u2029jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;32714&#8243;
